Foodies’ groups exist all over the United States. People with a passion for food love to get together to share in their foodie’s experience with other foodies. They not only share the positive aspects of socializing with food, but they offer good critiques of the dish they are served. Foodie’s groups network in a variety of ways. Facebook offers a great platform for a private Foodies group.
When did Foodies groups get started? The Word “Foodie” was first seen in print in the United States in the 1980’s. Like most things Amercian or British, once a term is used in one place it is quickly adopted in the other. It wasn’t long after that the British also adopted the word “Foodie. Gael Greene wrote in New York Magazine of a character who, “slips into the small Art Deco dining room of Restaurant, to graze cheeks with her devotees, serious foodies.” Soon afterwards, Ann Barr had asked readers to comment on the “new” obsession with food in London magazine, Harper’s & Queen. The British loved the idea of foodies so much, that it started the foodie’s trend there. Barr and Levy followed up with a book in 1984 called, “The Official Foodie Handbook”. Alas, the “foodie” is born.
Foodie groups began to spring up all over the United States and Britian. Early on, these groups were posted in local newspapers. When the internet became more popular in the 1990’s, many of the foodie groups were posted online in MSN or AOL groups. Social media has changed a lot since then, but the premise of the foodie group hasn’t. It is still all about food.
Foodies are food hobbyists with a love of food bent. Foodie’s interests are deeper than just tasting local cuisine. Foodies follow the openings and closings of restaurants, follow food trends and new recipes and also love to follow the origin of those recipes. Health and nutrition can play a part also in some foodie’s groups. The bottom line, foodies are all about food!
